May 22, 2008 - TONES, TEXTURES, TONES: FINAL SERIES CONCERT

A Creative Music Mini Series - 9PM - The Soda Night Gallery in Calgary (211 12 Ave SW) This is the final edition of Tones, which is a creative music mini series that features the best and most creative musicians from Calgary.  The night will feature Aaron Leaney, Simon Fisk, Jay Crocker, Eric Hamelin, and Chris Dadge.  Come and experience new compositions, sounds, and collective improvisation, something new is guaranteed.  The cover is Pay What You Can because we want people to decide what they think originality is worth and how much it matters to them; all proceeds go directly to the musicians.

If you're not in Calgary or under 18, you can hear this concert streaming live from your computer at www.plungerecords.com  (PlungeTV) – Around 9PM Mountain Time

April 23, 2008 - VANCOUVER TOUR

The shows in Vancouver this past weekend went really well. It was a very full trip visiting new and old friends, getting sax work done (Thanks Sandro Massullo!), and seeing the beautiful city. It did snow, but from a non-Vancouverite stand point, the weather was great. It was great seeing everyone at 1067 and meeting some of Vancouver's most talented musicians. Special thanks to JP Carter (The Inhabitants/ Aeroplane Trio) for helping organize the shows, Dave Chokroun for sitting in and expanding the trio to a double bass quartet, and Shane Krause and Rachel Wadham for putting us up.

March 5, 2008 - TONES, TEXTURES, TONES

Is a new music mini series that I'm organizing to feature creative musiciansfrom all over Alberta playing their own original music. It starts this month and will continue until May at The Soda Night Gallery in Calgary (211 12 ave SW - 403-264-515). The cover is Pay What You Can because we want people to decide what they think originality is worth and how much it matters; the money goes directly to the musicians. Please show your support for the creative community who aren't just regurgitating music from the 1950's.

Special shout out to Jahan Monast for designing the poster.

THURSDAYS, 9PM - MARCH 20, APRIL 17, MAY 22, 2008

January 22, 2008 - SPAM! SPAM! SPAM!

Sorry to everyone who's been getting annoying emails from news@aaronleaney.com. For some reason my email contacts have been getting junk sent to them; I sent something out about a week ago promoting the new CD and I guess something weird happened, anyways, I've deleted the list so you shouldn't get anything again as of today.

As far as the CD release is concerned, it went great! I was really happy with the music we played and glad to hear all of the positive feedback from audience members. Thank you to everyone who made it out and especially those who bought CDs. We were really happy to perform for Their Excellencies, the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, and Jean-Daniel Lafond, who were in attendence on Friday night. It was so nice of them to hang out after the show and meet the band.

A special thank you to everyone who took on the brutal weather Saturday and came out too, especially those who came from out of town!

January 14, 2008 - LABELS

Dennis Slater has written an article about Chris Dadge and me, published in Calgary's News & Entertainment Weekly - Read it here! FFWD VOL.13 NO.04

I am often labeld anti-jazz' or put into the 'experimental' or 'inaccessible' column, I would just like to say that the music I make is my own, and I write music that is interesting and difficult to play. This keeps me from getting bored with music which is important, because I don't want to lose my appetite for it. I play with Canadian musicians and I am Canadian too (born and raised), which surely must influence my music even if I am unconscious of it. I have spent many hours studying the music of John Coltrane, Bob Marley, Miles Davis, Steve Lacy, Wayne Shorter, Ornette Coleman, Daniel Lanois, Radiohead, and Bjork. I love them all equally and would say those artists speak to me on an emotional level. Genres are misleading, listen to the music first then choose for yourself.

"Over all, I think the main thing a musician would like to do is give a picture to the listener of the many wonderful things that he knows of and senses in the universe. . . That’s what I would like to do. I think that’s one of the greatest things you can do in life and we all try to do it in some way. The musician’s is through his music.” - John Coltrane
