AARON LEANEY 3

BIO AND BRIEF HISTORY

The group found its roots in Western Canada. Saxophonist Aaron Leaney and Drummer Chris Dadge hooked up as teens, bouncing between jazz bands and local jazz venues seeking out all the touring acts that came through the city. They both continued on their quest for musical education, Leaney in Toronto and Dadge in Calgary. Since graduating, the two have been busy playing and working on new material. Their first release together, Duo, features the two collaborating on free-jazz improvisations in the drums and saxophone tradition. Last year they met up with Edmonton bassist Thom Golub to form the trio with an emphasis on blending creative playing and composition. Thrilled by the instant chemistry, they decided to document some of their original works. Their new CD, Aaron Leaney Three, recorded live in November 2007, features four new compositions by Leaney. The music is full of emotion and spontaneity which fully captures the essence of the group, a merging and blurring of the lines between composition and improvisation. Leaney, with his long imaginative lines, is the featured soloist on Tenor and Alto saxophones, as well as clarinet. Golub's acoustic bass playing dives deep into extended technique, and Dadge's drum kit is mixed with electronic noises, blended together to make a distinctly original sound.
